SELLER FAQ
WHAT IS CFM ART MARKETPLACE?
CfM Art Marketplace is a friend-to-friend platform that connects art lovers with original artworks created and sold directly by artists. Whether you're a seasoned collector or a first-time buyer, CfM Art Marketplace is a trusted space to discover and purchase unique pieces by artists working today! CfM Art Marketplace is administered by Case for Making, a small studio supply shop founded on the deep belief that everyone is creative.
WHO CAN SELL ON CFM ART MARKETPLACE?
Artists and makers are welcome to create an account and list their own work. We currently accept only original, one-of-a-kind pieces made by hand. Mass-produced or drop-shipped products are not permitted.
HOW DO I CREATE A SELLER ACCOUNT?
To get started:
- Sign up for an account on CfM Art Marketplace, then click “Post Listing” in the menu bar. You’ll be instructed to fill out a W9 form for tax purposes. Once your W9 is successfully submitted, your seller profile is active.
- Complete your seller profile. This is a great way to get buyers excited about your work! Update your account details as needed by clicking your profile photo at the top right of the menu bar.
- In your profile, submit your payout details securely via Stripe connect, so you’ll be ready to accept payments to your bank account.
WHY DO I NEED TO SUBMIT A W-9 FORM?
As part of the onboarding process, U.S.-based sellers must complete a W-9 form, which is standard for any marketplace that facilitates payments. If your CfM Art Marketplace earnings exceed $600 in a calendar year, your W-9 will be used to generate a 1099 tax form for that year. CfM Art Marketplace partners with Avalara, an external sales tax processing service, to gather W9 information. CfM Art Marketplace does not directly collect or store your tax information—Avalara handles it securely in compliance with IRS regulations.
WHAT KINDS OF ART CAN I SELL?
You can list:
- Original paintings, drawings, illustrations or mixed media work
- Small sculptures
All work must be your own.
HOW DO I LIST AN ARTWORK?
From your dashboard:
- Click “Post Listing.”
- Select a category and fill out all required fields. Details regarding size, colors and themes will help interested buyers find your work through our search filters.
- If your piece incorporates CfM Handmade Watercolors or CfM Custom Paper Goods, you can check these materials in the listing details so our community can share in the fun!
- If your piece was created in a CfM Friends or CfM Art Room workshop, we ask that you credit the instructor in your listing to create a culture of mutual support.
- Add pricing info. Price your work within a fair range that accounts for your time and effort, materials, and 25% marketplace fee. If your piece is framed, make sure to account for the added framing time and materials.
- Set your pickup address if you have one, and set your shipping price (see shipping info below).
- Upload multiple, high-quality photos. Visit our Best Image Practices page for tips.
- Once you’ve submitted your piece, check your posting for accuracy. You can always edit or update listings by clicking your profile photo in the upper right of the menu bar.
WHAT ARE THE CFM ART MARKETPLACE SELLING FEES?
CfM Art Marketplace charges a 25% fee on each sale. This covers Stripe processing fees, platform costs, site maintenance, customer support, and exposure.
HOW DO I GET PAID?
All payments are processed securely through Stripe, our trusted payment partner. Once an order is confirmed or the delivery window has passed, Stripe transfers the funds directly to your connected bank account. To update your bank account, go to the payout details tab in your account settings.
HOW DO I ACCESS MY 1099 FORM?
You can download your 1099 from your Stripe Express dashboard at tax time. Your 1099 will be available by the end of January each year.
If you do not meet the $600 earnings threshold for a given year, you may not receive a 1099. However, your earnings are still your responsibility to report.
HOW DOES SHIPPING WORK?
Sellers are solely responsible for shipping artwork. Be sure to:
- Set accurate shipping prices in your listing. We recommend the USPS postage calculator as a handy tool for estimating shipping costs.
- Package artwork securely to prevent damage.
- Ship within the timeframe you specify.
- Provide tracking information (if available) via a message to your buyer.
You may also offer free shipping or pickup options if you choose.
CAN I CANCEL A SALE?
We ask that sellers avoid cancellations, as it affects buyer trust. If you absolutely must cancel (e.g., due to damage), please communicate with the buyer immediately by using the platform’s messaging tools. Then, contact us at artmarketplace[at]caseformaking.com to request cancellation of the sale. Repeated cancellations may result in account suspension.
WHAT HAPPENS IF A BUYER WANTS TO CANCEL A PURCHASE?
If an item has not shipped, a buyer may contact you to cancel the purchase. From there, please promptly contact us at artmarketplace[at]caseformaking.com to request cancellation of the sale.
WHAT IF A BUYER REQUESTS A RETURN OR A REFUND?
All sales are final once items have shipped. In certain instances involving damaged items or misrepresentation, you may be required to refund the buyer. Be clear and honest in your listings to help avoid misunderstandings. CfM Art Marketplace can assist in resolving disputes when needed, but dispute resolution is ultimately the seller’s responsibility.
WHERE CAN I FIND DETAILS ABOUT MY TRANSACTIONS?
Transaction details are stored in your inbox, as part of your messages with buyers. Your messages are your CfM Art Marketplace record of your transactions and communications with your buyers, and include a breakdown of shipping costs, fees, and payouts to your account. We recommend keeping a separate spreadsheet of your transactions, with details such as tracking info, buyer names, etc. for your records.
Your transaction details also include status alerts, such as shipping and review reminders. Be sure to check and promptly handle outstanding tasks to ensure smooth transactions with your buyers.
WHO PAYS SALES TAX ON CFM ART MARKETPLACE PURCHASES?
Buyers are automatically charged applicable sales tax at the time of purchase. CfM Art Marketplace handles sales tax collection and filings as part of our service.
HOW DO I PROMOTE MY ARTWORK?
- Use clean, bright, high-resolution images.
- Write clear, compelling and accurate descriptions.
- Share your CfM Art Marketplace listings on social media.
- Engage with the CfM Art Marketplace community through featured opportunities or promotions.
- Update or swap out your listings from time to time to keep things fresh!
HOW DO I LEAVE A REVIEW?
Once a transaction is complete, both the seller and buyer are prompted to share a review. You can find your reviews by viewing your profile page. Reviews support artists and help build trust within the community.
CAN A BUYER COMMISSION A CUSTOM PIECE?
This is up to you! Buyers can contact you via your profile to discuss ideas, timeline and price. We ask that sellers list commissioned work on CfM Art Marketplace to complete the transaction, as the fees we collect help us keep the marketplace running.
CAN I SELL THE SAME ARTWORK ELSEWHERE?
Yes, you retain full rights to your work. However, if you sell a piece currently listed on CfM Art Marketplace elsewhere, you must promptly remove or update the listing to avoid overselling.
CAN I SELL OTHER PEOPLE'S ARTWORK, OR RESELL ITEMS I'VE PURCHASED?
No, we ask that you only list work that you make yourself.
